Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word will soon be able to answer follow-up questions within the audio summary

With the new voice interaction in the Microsoft 365 Word audio summary, passive listening becomes a conversation: you listen to an audio summary and ask spoken follow-up questions about the document along the way. This is especially valuable for longer texts, documentation, or strategy papers that you want to understand quickly without constantly switching between the audio player, search, and the document itself. The feature is currently rolling out worldwide and looks very promising. We’ve summarized the most important information for you.

The voice interaction feature in Audio Overview is currently rolling out and should soon be available in Microsoft 365 Word. So what’s changing? Until now, audio summaries were a one-way experience: listen, pause, and manually look things up. With this update, playback remains the focus while you ask spoken questions and receive answers instantly. We see this as a particularly exciting step for situations where reading is impractical, such as before a meeting or when quickly getting up to speed on a lengthy document.

The feature is not yet available in the soluzione tenant. As a result, we are currently unable to provide a step-by-step guide. If you do not see the feature yet either, it has likely not been rolled out in your organization. This is expected to change over the coming weeks.  
  • Review the Answers: Spoken responses can help you understand the content more quickly, but they should not replace reviewing the original document, especially when dealing with figures, decisions, or deadlines.
  • Handle Confidential Information Carefully: Only ask follow-up questions about documents that you are authorized to process with Microsoft 365 Copilot in a work context. Spoken questions can easily lead to sharing details spontaneously.
 
  • Keep Your First Question Specific: While listening to Audio Overview, try asking something like: “What are the three key decisions mentioned in this document?” This provides faster orientation than a broad follow-up question.
  • Follow Up on Numbers Immediately: If the audio summary mentions revenue figures, dates, or quantities, ask right away where that information appears in the document. This helps keep the context fresh.
  • Use It as a Pre-Meeting Briefing: Listen to the Audio Overview of meeting notes and ask targeted questions on the go about open issues, responsibilities, or risks.
  • Clarify Unfamiliar Terms Instantly: If you hear acronyms, project names, or technical terminology, ask for clarification while listening. No rewinding, no searching.
  • Request Concise Answers: If needed, ask for responses in a single sentence. This works better with the audio format and helps keep the focus on the document.

The voice interaction feature in Audio Overview makes what was previously a passive experience much more dynamic: you are not just listening to a summary, you can ask questions while listening. We find this especially valuable for longer documents that need to be understood quickly before a meeting. The practical benefit lies in those small moments when something is unclear, you ask about it immediately, and receive an answer without interrupting the listening experience. At the same time, it is important to remain cautious: there is still limited community feedback available, and critical information should always be verified in the original document. Our recommendation for getting started, once the feature becomes available in your environment, is to select a longer, non-confidential Word document, generate an Audio Overview, and ask three targeted follow-up questions about decisions, figures, and open action items.
